Burkina Faso’s customs authorities announced Thursday the seizure of counterfeit, prohibited, and unfit-for-consumption goods worth more than 734 million CFA francs, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million USD.
The successful sweep was executed under “Operation Burkindi,” a targeted anti-smuggling campaign conducted nationwide between May 1 and June 15, 2026. During a detailed press briefing, customs officials showcased the massive haul of intercepted contraband, confirming the total value of the assets is estimated at precisely 734.19 million CFA francs. According to Customs Director General and Divisional Inspector Yves Kafando, the seized items span several categories of illegal or highly restricted substances, including amphetamines, tapentadol, cyanide, unapproved herbicides, street-vended medicines, cannabis, and various consumer goods smuggled into the country.
Key components of the seizure feature 264,000 tapentadol tablets valued at over 190 million CFA francs, alongside 3,983 cartons of unauthorized herbicides worth nearly 299 million CFA francs. Agents also confiscated 108 barrels of cyanide, 50 tons of banned plastic bags, and significant shipments of sugar, vegetable oils, beverages, and other basic foodstuffs. The operation successfully led to the arrest of several individuals suspected of operating these local smuggling networks. Paraded directly before the media, some of the suspects admitted to the charges and publicly urged their peers to abandon the illicit trade altogether.
Kafando praised the dedication of the customs agents and acknowledged the steadfast support of public authorities, noting that while smugglers are constantly evolving their tactics, their methods ultimately fall short of the adaptive capabilities of the customs administration. The Director General also highlighted the critical role played by the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP)—a local civilian militia—who directly assisted in intercepting 13 banned import motorcycles valued at 19.5 million CFA francs in the town of Bittou. Customs authorities emphasized that “Operation Burkindi” is part of a much broader national strategy to aggressively combat illicit trafficking, safeguard public health, and clean up commercial supply chains to protect the country’s fragile economy.
