In the wake of an officially announced foiled coup attempt, the Presidency of Burkina Faso has issued an order on Monday for all military unit leaders to report “immediately” to the capital, Ouagadougou, APA has learned.
Sources indicate that these unit leaders are required to attend a meeting deemed “highly important” by the authorities, though the specific agenda for the discussions has not been publicly disclosed.
This directive from the Presidency comes at a time of heightened security and institutional tensions within the country. On Monday evening, the Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, revealed to the nation that a destabilization attempt involving both active and former members of the armed forces had been successfully thwarted the previous week. According to the official statement broadcast on national television, intelligence services intercepted crucial communications between a Burkinabe soldier and leaders of armed groups. These communications reportedly involved sensitive information pertaining to the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), a civilian auxiliary force assisting the military.
The ensuing investigation led to the identification of several individuals suspected of involvement in the plot, including Lieutenant Abdrahmane Barry, Captain Jouani Compaore, Commander Frederic Ouedraogo, and Commander Constantin Kabore.
Burkinabe authorities have previously reported and denounced multiple attempts to destabilize the nation, which has been grappling with a persistent and escalating jihadist insurgency for several years, primarily concentrated in the northern and eastern regions of the country. The recent foiled coup attempt and the subsequent summoning of military leaders underscore the delicate security situation and the government’s efforts to maintain stability and address potential threats from within the armed forces.
