Burkina Faso is moving away from the traditional festive observance of International Women’s Day, shifting instead toward concrete empowerment initiatives, Minister of Family and Solidarity Pélagie Kaboré announced on Monday in Ouagadougou.
Speaking during a formal flag-raising ceremony, the minister outlined a major reorientation of the March 8 commemoration toward practical actions aimed at strengthening women’s economic autonomy.
She stated that the month of March, traditionally dedicated to women, will now be marked by structured initiatives across the country’s 17 regions. The new approach seeks measurable and sustainable outcomes,
breaking with the largely celebratory events of previous years.
According to Kaboré, the objective is to enhance women’s economic empowerment through high-impact programmes aligned with the transformation agenda pursued by the authorities under the leadership
of President Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
The minister also highlighted progress recorded at the start of 2026, particularly in modernizing public administration and strengthening national solidarity.
She welcomed the success of the Dɛmɛ Sira campaign, which mobilised nearly one billion CFA francs in financial and in-kind contributions.
Reaffirming the importance of discipline and professionalism within the civil service, Kaboré called on public officials to make the month of March a period of patriotic commitment in service of development and social cohesion.
