Launched on 24 April 2026, the RGPH-4 census is a major statistical exercise for Cameroon which has been extended into July.
It involves thousands of enumerators deployed across the country, in both urban and rural areas, with the aim of providing an up-to-date picture of the population and household living conditions.
For the first time, this census is being conducted in conjunction with the collection of data on agriculture and livestock farming, an integrated approach aimed at gaining a better understanding of the country’s socio-economic realities.
Challenges on the ground
According to the authorities, the extension of the completion date – originally set for 29 May – to 31 July 2026 is due to several constraints encountered during the enumeration phase. In certain
localities, particularly in remote areas, access to the population remains difficult due to the state of infrastructure, the remoteness of dwellings, or delays in certain logistical operations.
This extension should therefore help to reduce omissions and ensure more comprehensive coverage of the national territory.
The data from the RGPH-4 is considered essential for development planning. In particular, it will be used to guide public policy in the areas of health, education, employment and infrastructure.
It will also enable public resources to be allocated more effectively and improve decision-making at both national and local levels.
With this extension, the authorities aim to ensure the reliability of the census results, which are regarded as a strategic tool for Cameroon’s medium- and long-term development.
