Chad’s High Authority for Media and Audiovisual Media (HAMA) has a new leader: Halima Assadya Ali was appointed as its President on May 21.
She succeeds Abderaman Barka Doningar, whose tenure was marked by criticism over perceived restrictions on the press.
The appointment of HAMA’s new leadership team was made public via a presidential decree on May 21. Halima Assadya Ali, who previously served as the Deputy Director General of Communications for the Presidency, now heads this significant media regulatory institution.
Her predecessor, Abderaman Barka Doningar, had been in office since May 16, 2022. During his time, he faced considerable criticism from journalists, particularly concerning the introduction of a mandatory journalist’s identity card and the tightening of requirements for establishing new press outlets.
