Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has officially conceded defeat in the country’s 2025 presidential election, congratulating opposition leader Peter Mutharika on his victory and pledging a peaceful transition of power.
Speaking from Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Wednesday, Chakwera acknowledged that Mutharika, representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), had secured an insurmountable lead with results from 24 councils tallied and only 12 remaining.
“A moment ago, I called Professor Mutharika directly to congratulate him on his historic victory and to wish him well as the incoming President of the Republic of Malawi,” Chakwera said.
The outgoing president commended Malawians for their peaceful participation in the 16 September polls and said his decision to concede was rooted in respect for the Constitution and the will of the people.
He directed his administration to begin preparations for a smooth handover, noting the importance of safeguarding national peace and institutional integrity.
The announcement comes ahead of the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) formal declaration of final results expected later Wednesday.
Chakwera praised MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and her team for conducting a transparent and credible electoral process, while urging the Commission to investigate reported irregularities and ensure accountability.
Calling for national unity, Chakwera appealed to citizens across political divides to rally behind President-elect Mutharika.
