Espérance Sportive de Tunis became the second African club to enter the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, following Egypt’s Al Ahly’s opening draw.
However, the Tunisian “Blood and Gold” suffered a 0-2 defeat to Brazil’s CR Flamengo on Monday, June 16, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, in their Group D opener.
The Brazilian side quickly established their lead with a goal from Giorgian De Arrascaeta in the 17th minute. Luiz Araujo then sealed the victory in the 70th minute. Despite a committed effort from the Tunisians and vibrant support from their fans in the United States and back home, Espérance was unable to turn the tide against a technically superior Flamengo team.
Espérance, the 2024 African Champions League finalists, struggled to trouble the Brazilian goalkeeper, managing only 31 percent possession and two shots on target. Nevertheless, the exceptional atmosphere in the stands underscored the fervent support of the African fans present.
In the other Group D match, Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory against Los Angeles FC, further complicating matters for Espérance in this challenging group. The Tunisians’ next crucial match will be on June 20 in Nashville against Los Angeles FC.
Beyond Al Ahly (Egypt) and Espérance (Tunisia), two other African clubs are participating in the tournament: Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa). The South Africans are set to make their debut against Ulsan Hyundai (South Korea) on the night of June 17-18, while Wydad Casablanca will kick off their campaign later in the week.
