Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana have taken a decisive step as part of the process of respecting their territorial boundaries.
.A joint mission, conducted last month, resulted in the installation of 78 new boundary markers along a strategic 150 km stretch., rendering their common border clearer.
From February 2 to 21, 2026, the Joint Technical Commission deployed its teams in the field for a highly precise undertaking.
The objective was to physically mark the border on the segment connecting markers BP45 (Nsiakrom/Yaou) to BP55 (Newtown/Afforenou).
The operation, carried out using cutting-edge technology to address any blind spots, left no room for improvisation.
During a preparatory meeting held in November 2025 in Elubo, Ghana, experts from both countries opted for the use of the Hxgn SmartNet PPP service. This real-time satellite correction technology was preferred to the traditional NTRIP RTK method, deemed ineffective in this area lacking adequate network coverage.
Thanks to this system, the installation of the 78 new boundary markers was carried out with metric precision, guaranteeing the reliability of the boundary line for decades to come.
Sessions were held to inform and raise awareness among stakeholders about the ongoing border
reaffirmation process.
Beyond the technical aspects, the success of this mission relied on strong involvement from local communities. Alongside the work, awareness sessions were conducted with prefectural authorities,
traditional leaders, and the defense and security forces of both countries.
The objectives are multifaceted: to inform local residents about the reaffirmation process, prevent land disputes, and strengthen cross-border cooperation.
The priority fo rthe commission is to make this border a space of peace, social cohesion, and socio-economic development.
A Joint Technical Commission was established in Abidjan in August 2023. Its dual mission is to reaffirm the land border and implement the decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) regarding the maritime border.
In implementing its program of activities adopted within the framework of reaffirming the land border between the two countries, the joint technical commission undertook a joint technical field study and a survey of existing border markers between 2023 and 2025.
