On the occasion of Djibouti’s 48th Independence Day, President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh on Friday reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to achieving “full and complete sovereignty,” grounded in unity, resilience, and economic innovation.
In a nationwide broadcast and an impressive military parade in Djibouti City, the Head of State stressed the importance of relying more heavily on domestic resources to drive development, despite an international context marked by instability, climate and migration crises and uncertain economic growth.
“We must protect our social and economic model and strengthen our resilience,” President Guelleh stated, emphasizing the need for economic diversification and innovation to preserve the country’s competitiveness.
The President also paid tribute to the martyrs of independence, national security forces and all citizens working to uphold national unity.
He expressed Djibouti’s solidarity with suffering populations around the world, particularly in Sudan and Palestine.
“We will not remain indifferent to the fratricidal conflict in Sudan,” he affirmed, strongly condemning “the genocidal intentions in Gaza” and called for a two-state solution in line with United Nations Resolution 181.
The celebrations saw widespread public participation across the country and attended by top national figures including Prime Minister Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed, National Assembly Speaker Dileita Mohamed Dileita, and First Lady Kadra Mahamoud Haid.
