The Nigerien government has signed two agreements with Libyan technology firm Al Itissan Al-Jadeed to modernise its biometric passport and national identity card systems.
Niger’s Minister of State for the Interior Mohamed Toumba signed two memoranda of understanding with Al Itissan Al-Jadeed director Wissal Samtali, during a ceremony held in Niamey.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior and accessed by APA on Saturday, the first memorandum outlines a public-private partnership for the financing, construction and maintenance of a polycarbonate biometric e-passport system equipped with embedded electronic chips.
The agreement also includes provisions for the digital archiving of personal identity records, aimed at modernising civil documentation and enhancing data security in the country.
The second memorandum focuses on the introduction of a new, secure biometric national identity card for Nigerien citizens.
