Kenyan leader William Ruto has vowed stiff legal retribution against Generation Z protesters who took to the street nationwide last Wednesday.
At least 11 people were killed including students when youth clashed with anti-riot forces in the capital Nairobi and other cities across Kenya during violent street protests against the government’s widely unpopular tax regime.
Scores of demonstrators were also rounded up during the protests which came on the anniversary of similar demonstrations last years against tax levies.
While speaking as he hosted Kenyan regional and county security and national administrators at State House in Nairobi on Saturday President Ruto said the ”criminals that attacked our officers and destroyed property in the Wednesday mayhem will be held to account”.
He said his government will refuse to tolerate so-called criminals running after Kenyan police officers out to restore order.
”If a policeman’s life is in danger, then, how can our families be safe? This trend must change.
”We will stand by every man and woman in uniform, and protect them, as they discharge their duties.
That is how we will have a more secure and stable Kenya where meaningful development occurs” he added.
He expressed pride in the Kenya Defence Forces ”for their commitment to safeguarding our security in the wake of rapidly evolving threats”.
