As a regional summit urges an immediate ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Me Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita, has undertaken a strategic visit to troubled North Kivu.
A few days after the Dar es Salaam summit, which emphasised the need to stabilise eastern DRC, the Deputy Prime Minister arrived in Beni on Monday.
“This visit is in direct alignment with presidential directives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) operations on the ground,” stated the Deputy Prime Minister’s Communication Office.
His trip comes amid a highly sensitive regional situation. The recent summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) called for an immediate ceasefire and the unification of the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes, highlighting the urgency of the security situation.
Regional leaders also urged the withdrawal of uninvited foreign forces, the securing of Goma, and the resumption of direct negotiations with all parties, including the M23 rebel group.
