Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty advocated for the stabilization of the ceasefire in Gaza and the continued, unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid during a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday, December 11.
The ministers discussed recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and international efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire and ease tensions in the West Bank.
Minister Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s ongoing efforts to maintain regional security, emphasizing the need to stabilize the ceasefire in Gaza. He stressed that Security Council Resolution 2803 must be fully implemented to ensure the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid.
The minister also addressed the ongoing consultations regarding the deployment of an international stabilization force and reaffirmed Egypt’s categorical rejection of any calls for the “deportation of Palestinians” or any attempts to alter the geographical and demographic status of the area.
Furthermore, Abdelatty called for concerted action to increase the daily volume of humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip to meet the massive needs, reiterating Egypt’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people’s rights, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state.
The Egyptian official also warned of the gravity of the situation in the West Bank, citing a “worrying escalation of settler violence and the continuation of land confiscation policies.” He argued that this approach risks widening the hotspots of tension and stressed the “urgent responsibility” of the international community to intervene immediately to stop these violations.
Finally, Abdelatty emphasized the “irreplaceable and indispensable role” of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in supporting Palestinian refugees, welcoming the recent UN General Assembly resolution renewing UNRWA’s mandate for another three years.
