The Kingdom of Morocco and the United Nations (UN) have signed two major agreements aimed at strengthening the country’s interaction with international human rights mechanisms and supporting the consolidation of gender equality.
The two agreements were initialed in Rabat on Thursday by the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights (DIDH), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and UN Women. Both agreements place human rights at the core of their actions, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable Morocco.
The first agreement, signed by DIDH Delegate Mohammed El Habib Belkouch and UNFPA Representative Marielle Sander, focuses on supporting Morocco’s efforts to enhance its engagement with international human rights mechanisms.
This project, which targets all social categories, especially the most vulnerable, aims to consolidate the partnership to help national efforts implement recommendations from UN human rights mechanisms into national planning, policies, and strategies, and build capacity for both governmental and non-governmental actors in their interaction with these mechanisms.
Ms. Sander praised Morocco’s progress in harmonizing its legislation with international human rights law, calling the initiative a strong signal of the Kingdom’s pioneering role in this area.
The second agreement, signed by Mr. Belkouch and UN Women Representative Myriem Ouchen Noussairi, establishes a framework for strengthening the Kingdom’s application of its international commitments regarding the rights of women and girls.
The three-year agreement specifically aims to effectively integrate a gender perspective into policies and programs, including the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH), improve institutional coordination for implementing international recommendations on women’s rights, and promote a culture of gender equality through training and awareness campaigns.
Mr. Belkouch emphasized that these partnerships will strengthen the capacities of the DIDH, its partners, and civil society, enabling them to produce studies and engage in dialogue on emerging international challenges.
