The government of Ethiopia has banned the importation of Sinotruck vehicles over quality defects, APA can report over the weekend.
Authorities of the Ethiopian Customs Commission said the Chinese made Sinotruk vehicles have caused repeated accidents across the country, leading to loss of life and significant property damage.
Customs Commission Communications Director Zerihun Assefa confirmed that the prohibition will remain in place until the Chinese manufacturer addresses the identified technical and safety issues.
“The defects have not only affected vehicle performance but have also resulted in fatal accidents and destruction of property. Until Sinotruk takes the necessary corrective measures, their vehicles will not be allowed into the country,” Asefa stated.
The decision follows multiple incidents linked to structural and mechanical failures in Sinotruk models. According to the Commission, these recurring problems raised urgent public safety concerns, prompting the government to take decisive regulatory action.
Asefa said the commission has not issued any new import permits for Sinotruk vehicles since May and this marks one of the longest-standing import restrictions on a specific automotive brand in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia’s construction sector heavily relies on imported vehicles mainly Sinotruk vehicles.
However, the Customs Commission insists that public safety remains the top priority, even if it means short-term disruptions in supply.
