Ethiopia is waiting for approval to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) after it won the full backing of African nations during the regular session of the 30th COP30, currently taking place in Belém, Brazil.
The African Group of Negotiators (AGN), currently chaired by Tanzania, confirmed that Ethiopia’s proposal to host the COP32 won the acceptance of African delegates over that of Nigeria.
The Ethiopian Ambassador to Brazil, Leulseged Tadesse also confirmed this on Tuesday.
Thanking the AGN for its support, Tadesse said the country looks forward to welcoming delegates to Addis Ababa.
“We are deeply grateful for the trust and confidence bestowed on the Ethiopian people and government. We would like to reiterate our commitment to hosting the African COP in 2027,” Tadesse said.
The country had officially announced its interest to host the ‘Africa COP’ two months back at the second Africa Climate Summit – six months after Nigeria first threw its hat into the ring.
The more immediate choice of host for next year’s COP31 remains unresolved, however, with both Australia and Turkey vying for it.
COP host countries adopt a presidency role which allows them to set goals for the summit and showcase their own climate issues, as well as an important position in resolving any conflicts that arise during negotiations.
