The family of Mountaga Tall Monday claimed that the whereabouts of the former minister and lawyer who was whisked away from his Bamako home on the night of May 2nd, are still not known.
The family of Mountaga Tall has called on Malian authorities to clarify the circumstances of his disappearance, after announcing his abduction from his home on the night of Saturday, May 2nd, 2026.
In a press release dated May 3 in Bamako, they specify that the lawyer and politician was taken away by armed and masked individuals in unregistered vehicles, whose identities and status were unknown at the time.
According to the press release, Mr. Tall’s wife was assaulted during the operation, and her phone was confiscated. The family states that no judicial or administrative authority has confirmed his detention, nor has it communicated the reasons for any potential deprivation of liberty. She also stated that she has no reliable information regarding her place of detention, her state of health, or her legal status.
The former minister’s family indicated that they have contacted the Bar Association and begun assembling a defense team composed of national and international lawyers. They are demanding that the circumstances of his abduction be established, that his whereabouts be disclosed, and that his fundamental rights be respected.
According to one of his relatives, Mahmoud Touré, armed and masked men entered Mountaga Tall’s home shortly before midnight, without offering any explanation or issuing an arrest warrant.
Malian authorities had not made any public comment on the case at the time of publication.
His disappearance comes a few days after coordinated attacks targeting Bamako, Kati, and several other locations in Mali.
The attacks resulted in the death of defense minister, General Sadio Camara. The JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) claimed responsibility for operations presented as joint, while Malian
authorities announced the opening of investigations and arrests related to suspicions of internal complicity.
Mountaga Tall is a well-known figure in Malian politics. A lawyer by profession, he served as Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, then as Minister of Digital Economy and Communication.
He is also president of the National Congress for Democratic Initiative (CNID-Faso Yiriwa Ton).
His career is linked to the Malian democratic movement of the 1990s, which ended the dictatorship of the time.
Mountaga Tall also belonged to the M5-RFP, a movement that played a significant role in the protests against President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in 2020, before his fall following a military coup.
Initially associated with the momentum following the change of power, he subsequently distanced himself from the transitional authorities.
In the legal sphere, Mr. Tall is involved in several sensitive cases.
He is one of the lawyers for former Prime Minister Moussa Mara, whose two-year prison sentence, one year of which was suspended, was upheld on appeal on February 9, 2026.
The defense had announced an appeal to the Supreme Court to overturn this decision and secure their client’s release.
He is also representing military personnel arrested and dismissed in a case of attempted destabilization. Among them are Generals Abass Dembélé and Néma Sagara, arrested in early August 2025, dismissed along with nine other military personnel, and then charged by a military court with “attempted destabilization” and “undermining state security.”
Mr. Tall’s family is now calling on national authorities, as well as regional and international organisations, to take up the matter.
No official communication confirming his place of detention or the reasons for a possible arrest was mentioned in the family statement.
