Multiple landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in southern Ethiopia killed 30 people, a local administration disclosed on Wednesday.
The Gamo Zone administration, in a social media post, said the deadly landslides occurred on Tuesday in Gamo zone of South Ethiopia region, killing a total of 30 people and wounding many others following a period of unrelenting downpours that battered the region’s highland areas. The floods and landslides have also caused extensive property damage, leveling residential houses and destroying vital infrastructure.
Among the victims were a mother and her two children who were killed instantly when a landslide struck their home in Yela locality of Bonke district . The father survived but sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at Bonke Gazeso Health Center.
The regional government has pledged to provide all necessary resources to help the Gamo Zone recover from this environmental catastrophe. The authorities called on the community to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency directives to avoid further loss of life.
They said debris from landslides and floodwaters have blocked public transport routes, disrupting movement and complicating rescue operations in affected areas.
