Gambia has expressed its unalloyed support for Moroccan control over the disputed Western Sahara region straddling the Atlantic Ocean.
After Wednesday’s talks in Rabat between Gambia’s new foreign minister Serign Modou Njie and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, the former described the kingdom’s autonomy initiative as the only viable solution to one of Africa’s most enduring territorial disputes.
Gambia Consulate General opened in Dakhla in January 2020, the first consulate general to open in the disputed territory.
Banjul’s position is contained in a joint communiqué which says the Moroccan Autonomy Plan is ”the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to this issue.”
Mr. Njie said the consensus, driven by Moroccan King Mohammed VI, in support of the Autonomy Plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over the enclave was gaining international traction.
