The Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)
November 3rd to 14th has been set by The Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission for the nomination of prospective candidates of the presidential election in December, APA can report from Banjul on Friday.
The Gambia goes the polls to elect a new president on December 5th.
The IEC has urged presidential aspirants and their agents to submit their nomination papers and prescribed fees to the commission during this period.
Ove 20 aspirants had applied to contest the 2021 presidential vote but only six including incumbent President Adama Barrow were cleared to run.
President Barrow is seeking a controversial third term and faces opposition from perennial aspirant Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party who was his main challenger five years ago.
The other candidates cleared to run in 2021 were Mamma Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Halifa Sallah of the People’s Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), independent contender Essa Mbye Faal and the now late Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh of the National Unity Party (NUP).
