Ghana and India have discussed the need to strengthen cooperation for diplomatic training for diplomats of their two countries.
This was among a myriad of strategic issues discussed between the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto and India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during his first official visit to Ghana on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
The two ministers discussed the strengthening of cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of Ghana and the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS) of India, to facilitate the training of diplomats, exchange of perspectives and sharing of experiences on common diplomatic and multilateral priority issues.
During the visit, Ablakwa stated that Ghana and India had historically been champions of the Global South and shared a commitment to independence, self-reliance, dignity, and strategic autonomy
According to the report distributed by the APO Group on behalf of Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana and India have reaffirmed their historical credentials as champions of the Global South, dating back to the days of the founding fathers of the two independent countries, namely President Kwame Nkrumah, and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The report said that this was emphasised during this first official visit to Ghana by India’s External Affairs Minister.
It added that Ablakwa noted that, Ghana and India had historically been champions of the Global South and shared a commitment to independence, self-reliance, dignity, and strategic autonomy.
He observed that the two countries faced similar development challenges and therefore had significant opportunities to pool their experiences and expertise together in addressing common priorities.
On his part, Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the similarities between Ghana’s Accra Reset, Feed Ghana and One Million Coders initiatives and India’s programmes in health, food security, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship, noting that such parallels created opportunities for knowledge and experience sharing.
