The first phase of Guinea’s Gbassikolo Lake development project, a cornerstone of the nation’s urban modernization and “Branding Guinea” initiative, is nearing completion, with delivery scheduled in the coming weeks.
On Saturday, Djiba Diakite, Chairman of the Simandou Strategic Committee and Minister-Director of the President’s Office, conducted a site inspection to assess the final stages of the project, which was launched in August 2023. He was accompanied by Minister of Labor and Public Service Faya François Bourouno, Minister of Culture and Crafts Moussa Moïse Sylla, and representatives from the Albayrak company, among other officials.
The “Laguinëfé” national branding infrastructure project, overseen by Minister Diakite, is set to deliver a major public space aimed at enhancing the country’s cultural and touristic appeal. The completed Phase I includes: A 900-meter protective fence. A children’s playground. Nearly one hectare of green space. A 22,000 square meter lake featuring a fountain. A cafeteria, an administrative building, and a museum.
The Simandou Strategic Committee has formulated final recommendations to ensure the highest standards are met before the scheduled completion date: December 20, 2025, at 8:20 p.m. A second phase is already planned to add further infrastructure and attractive features.
Minister Bourouno emphasized that the project directly aligns with the Branding Guinea initiative and supports urban modernization, particularly within the framework of the Simandou 2040 program, specifically its pillar dedicated to education and culture.
Minister Moïse Sylla, responsible for monitoring compliance with specifications, hailed the project as a “success story,” highlighting its contribution to enhancing the country’s cultural and touristic heritage.
Lake Gbassikolo will join a growing collection of modernized urban spaces in Conakry, including the October 2nd Garden, the People’s Palace, and La Paillote, and is connected to the Conakry Citizen Park and Camayenne Beach. This effort aligns with the three core objectives of Branding Guinea: attracting investment, promoting national culture, and strengthening tourism.
