A national political forum meeting in Misrata has concluded its work by issuing a stern call to Libyan parties to accelerate the formation of a unified national government and immediately move forward with holding presidential and parliamentary elections.
The national forum, titled “The Future of Libya,” brought together diverse stakeholders, including political forces, municipal representatives, civil society actors, and several political parties on Saturday. Its final declaration emphasized the urgent necessity of institutional reform. Participants warned that the continued fragmentation of the government “exacerbates the crises and threatens the country’s stability.”
The attendees called for the swift establishment of a single executive capable of leading the transition period and preparing for credible elections. They stressed that all Libyan actors must proactively support the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to unify the country’s institutions and foster a lasting political compromise.
The forum’s press release highlighted a “serious governmental deficiency” evidenced by the persistence of parallel governmental structures and the dispersion of public spending in the absence of a unified development budget. Organizers caution that this governmental chaos directly contributes to the ongoing deterioration of essential services and complicates effective economic management.
Furthermore, the declaration explicitly demanded the strengthening of transparency and governance mechanisms within all public institutions. It recommended fully activating oversight bodies to decisively combat corruption, regulate public spending, and guarantee the protection of state funds.
According to the participants, only consolidated and transparent governance will be able to restore public confidence, stabilize state institutions, and create the necessary conditions for a sustainable return to political normalcy.
