The Mohamed Naguib Air Base in Egypt has been the scene of a flagship joint military exercise with the United States which exhibited the Egyptian army’s growing strength and its position as a central security player in the Middle East.
43 participating countries and more than 8,000 soldiers were involved in the joint exercise.
Launched on August 28 and scheduled to run through September 10, Exercise Bright Star 2025 marks a turning point in major regional military exercises.
Initiated in 1980 as a bilateral exercise between Egypt and the United States, these exercises have become the largest multinational operation in the Middle East.
The 19th edition brings together 14 active contributing countries – including U.S. forces – and 29 observer countries, alongside organisations such as NATO and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The unprecedented nature of the participation, combining land, air, naval, and special forces, reflects a desire to prepare the armed forces for multiple threats: conventional conflicts, terrorism, chemical warfare, cyberattacks, and even offensive drones.
The use of live ammunition and the diversity of scenarios reinforce the realistic dimension of the exercises.
“Bright Star 2025 is a demonstration of military and diplomatic power, but also a laboratory for tactical exchanges,” says military expert General Mohamed Al-Ghobary.
Egypt is leveraging its logistical capacity and modern infrastructure – the Mohamed Naguib, Hussein Tantawi, and Bernis bases – to host large-scale forces.
This capability, praised by the U.S. command, reinforces Cairo’s role as a regional security hub. The presence of
observers from 33 countries also confirms the appeal of the Egyptian model in the fight against terrorism, forged by decades of fighting in the Sinai and recognised as a benchmark.
The manoeuvres are not limited to military matters. They also serve as a showcase for the national defense industry, showcasing locally produced equipment. At the same time, they convey a clear political message: in a Middle East marked by tensions, Egypt intends to reaffirm its combat readiness and its role as a security mediator.
Beyond training, Bright Star 2025 therefore serves as a tool of deterrence and military diplomacy. The successful organisation of this massive exercise, mobilising colossal resources and complex international coordination, gives Egypt enhanced strategic visibility, confirming its position among the world’s top fifteen military powers.
