On the 70th anniversary of the National Army, Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed praised the institution as a cornerstone of the country’s sovereignty, development, and stability, while highlighting its deep connection to the Tunisian people.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the milestone at the Carthage Palace, President Saïed reaffirmed the military’s strategic role in national defense and state-building. As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Head of State also promoted several officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers, and awarded decorations to distinguished military personnel. In his official order of the day addressed to the troops, Saïed noted that June 24, 1956—the date of the army’s founding—remains a foundational milestone for the modern Tunisian state, emphasizing that the institution, shaped by its history and evolution, remains steadfastly committed to the values of discipline, sacrifice, and loyalty to the nation while deeply embodying its close bond with the population.
The Tunisian president underscored the diverse array of missions entrusted to the armed forces, pointing to their contributions to national defense as well as their ongoing operations against terrorism, smuggling, drug trafficking, and irregular migration. He also commended their vital role in securing key national events, including national examinations and electoral consultations. Beyond their primary security mandate, Saïed stressed the military’s major contribution to infrastructure and economic development, citing the specific achievements of the Directorate General of Military Engineering in constructing roads, bridges, and public spaces, as well as building healthcare infrastructure and preserving national heritage. Additionally, he noted Tunisia’s long-standing commitment to United Nations peacekeeping operations, which the armed forces have actively participated in since the 1960s. Furthermore, the Head of State highlighted ongoing efforts to boost domestic production capabilities within the defense industry, explaining that this strategic focus aims to enhance the operational readiness of the armed forces, optimize defense spending, and strengthen the country’s strategic autonomy. He concluded by reaffirming that the National Army remains a vital bulwark of the Republic, dedicated to the security, stability, and sovereignty of Tunisia.
