Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb has called for a nationwide mobilization of institutions and civil society to combat drug trafficking and abuse, describing the phenomenon as a threat to national security, social cohesion, and development.
Speaking on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Prime Minister Ghrieb reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stepping up the fight against narcotics and psychotropic substances. The ceremony, hosted at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center, brought together cabinet members, security officials, judicial representatives, and civil society actors to emphasize the urgency of the situation. In his address, the Head of Government noted that drug abuse has escalated beyond a public health concern, now posing a direct threat to national security, social stability, and sustainable development. He also highlighted the established links between drug trafficking networks and transnational organized crime, calling for a coordinated response from all relevant institutions.
Declaring that the fight against this phenomenon is a national duty and a civilizational challenge, Ghrieb warned that drugs undermine the country’s human capital and long-term development prospects. He emphasized that this mobilization must deeply involve public authorities, security forces, the judiciary, educational institutions, and civil society organizations dedicated to early prevention. Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted the initial results of the 2025–2029 national strategy against drugs and psychotropic substances, which has just completed its first year of implementation.
According to authorities, the strategy relies on a comprehensive approach rooted in inter-agency coordination, identifying root causes, strengthening prevention, improving care for affected individuals, and intensifying crackdowns on traffickers. Finally, the Algerian leader indicated that recent legislative updates aim to adapt legal frameworks to the evolving methods used by criminal organizations involved in narcotics trafficking, aligning with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and fulfilling Algeria’s regional and international commitments to combating drugs and organized crime.
