Lesotho’s Foreign Minister Lejone Mpotjoane announced on Monday that the government plans to engage the United States over the high tariffs imposed on the country by the Trump administration.
Speaking at a press conference, Mpotjoane clarified that contrary to speculation in international media, Lesotho has not yet made any commitments to the US regarding the tariffs.
Mpotjoane revealed that the government, through its embassy in Washington, is facilitating a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Samuel Matekane and President Donald Trump to discuss the issue.
He noted that the government was preparing to enter deliberations to advocate for a resolution that benefits Lesotho’s economy.
The tariffs, announced early this month, have placed significant pressure on Lesotho’s trade relations with the US, affecting key exports and economic stability.
The southern African kingdom faces one of the steepest tariff hikes, with a staggering 50 percent levy imposed on its exports to the US, primarily textiles.
