Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah has renewed his support for UN Special Envoy Hanna Tetteh and rejected any further transitional phase, reaffirming his desire to proceed “directly to elections.”
The head of the Government of National Unity received the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, in Tripoli on Wednesday.
According to the government platform “Hakomitna,” the meeting focused on the UN mission’s efforts within the structured dialogue—based on three pillars: governance, economy, and security—as well as initiatives related to national reconciliation. Dbeibah reiterated his full support for the UN official, stressing “the importance of responding to the aspirations of the Libyan people to proceed directly to elections without going through new transitional stages.”
The PM suggested that the recent position of the High National Election Commission confirmed his assessment: that electoral laws constitute the major obstacle to holding the polls. He called for a rapid correction of these texts to allow Libyans to choose their leaders “through the ballot box” and overcome the institutional impasse that has persisted since the failure of the 2021 electoral process.
At the end of the meeting, both parties highlighted the necessity of strengthening coordination between the government and UNSMIL, with a view to supporting ongoing initiatives and advancing the political process toward “transparent and inclusive” elections. UNSMIL specified that the discussion had also covered the implementation of the roadmap, notably the launch of the structured dialogue announced by Tetteh.
The UN mission also recalled the recent signing of an agreement on the Unified Development Program between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, which it considers “an important first step” toward improving public finance management and establishing a unified budget.
UNSMIL added that Dbeibah expressed his appreciation for the Special Envoy’s efforts and reaffirmed his willingness to continue cooperation for the country’s stability, unity, and development.
This latest show of support comes amid strong international pressure to relaunch an electoral process that has stalled the Libyan transition for several years.
