The Ministry of Defense of the Government of National Unity (GNU) announced on Wednesday, May 14th, the implementation of an immediate ceasefire across all conflict zones in and around the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
This declaration of a ceasefire by the GNU’s Defense Ministry underscores the persistent fragility of the security situation in Libya.
In an official statement, the ministry indicated that regular forces, in collaboration with security services, have begun deploying neutral units to various hotspots within the capital to ensure a de-escalation of the recent violence.
The ministry urged all involved parties to strictly adhere to the ceasefire and to refrain from any actions or statements that could potentially reignite the clashes. This measure follows a night of intense armed confrontations, particularly in central Tripoli, which prompted the declaration of a state of emergency, the suspension of educational activities (classes and exams), and the temporary relocation of Mitiga Airport flights to Misrata Airport.
The Defense Ministry affirmed that this response is a fulfillment of its national duty to restore public order and to prevent any exploitation of the situation that could undermine legitimate institutions.
The government reiterated its unwavering commitment to national unity, the rule of law, and an end to unauthorized armed demonstrations.
