The President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Younes Menfi, has begun a working visit to Tunisia, according to an official statement from the Tunisian presidency.
The visit, which began on Monday, August 18, 2025, is intended to strengthen the “fraternal and historic” relations between the two countries.
Menfi’s visit comes at a time of ongoing political instability in Libya and growing economic challenges in Tunisia. The primary objective is to boost bilateral cooperation, particularly in key areas like security, trade, and the management of cross-border migration flows.
Tunisia is a vital strategic partner for Libya due to their long shared border and extensive human and economic exchanges. The Ras Jedir border crossing, which has been frequently closed due to security tensions, highlights the critical need for increased coordination between the two nations. The Tunisian presidency noted that the visit is a reflection of both countries’ desire to “consolidate political dialogue” and promote joint projects in infrastructure, energy, and training. It also aims to align their positions on sensitive regional issues, such as the migration crisis and the fight against cross-border smuggling networks.
In a volatile regional climate, marked by conflict in the Sahel and pressure from foreign powers in the Mediterranean, this visit underscores the importance for Tunis and Tripoli to reinforce their close relationship. The visit will determine whether this renewed momentum will lead to concrete agreements or remain limited to declarations of principle.
