Private sector stakeholders in Misrata, Libya have rejected an increase in electricity tariffs and demand an urgent review of the measure.
Owners of businesses, factories, and commercial and service activities gathered Wednesday at the Misrata Chamber of Commerce to protest the increase for commercial activities.
The meeting, chaired by Fathi Al-Amin Al-Turki, President of the Chamber, discussed a letter issued by the Chairman of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) regarding the implementation of an increase in electricity rates.
Participants discussed measures to be taken in response to this decision, highlighting its direct impact on the most vulnerable citizens.
On this occasion, it was decided to prepare a complaint addressed to the relevant authorities, requesting a review of this decision and the adoption of swift solutions.
In the event of no response from the relevant institutions, representatives of the economic sectors have raised the possibility of intensifying their mobilisation, without specifying the forms this escalation might take.
In this context, the approach of economic operators reflects growing concern about the effects of tariff adjustments in an already tense economic climate, marked by difficulties accessing energy and
persistent institutional instability.
