The Malawian government is working closely with South African authorities to verify the identities of 43 people killed in a devastating bus accident in Limpopo province and to support survivors, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday.
The ministry said in a statement that officials from Malawi’s High Commission in Pretoria are on the ground assisting with forensic identification and providing consular aid to affected nationals.
Efforts are also underway to trace missing persons and ensure that injured Malawians receive appropriate medical care.
The accident occurred on Sunday when a Malawi-bound bus carrying over 90 passengers crashed in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province.
Forty-three people lost their lives while 41 others sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation by South African authorities.
