During his address at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Seville, Spain, General Abdoulaye Maiga, Prime Minister of Mali and Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, called for a resolute international response to sever the links between terrorism and its alleged sponsors.
Speaking on behalf of the Confederation of Sahel States (ESA), he urged the global community to “disconnect terrorism from its sponsors.”
On Monday, Prime Minister Maiga firmly reiterated the commitment of ESA leaders to elevate the nascent confederation into an autonomous, pan-Africanist power, centered on strengthened South-South cooperation. Among significant announcements, General Maïga revealed the establishment of an AES investment and development bank, capitalized with an initial 500 billion CFA francs. This institution is intended to finance the shared strategic priorities of the member countries.
Advocating for a bold reform of the international financial architecture, the Prime Minister denounced existing imbalances and appealed to the international community for greater solidarity, particularly in the ongoing fight against terrorism. His emphasis on “disconnecting terrorism from its sponsors” served as a clear allusion to the alleged foreign backing of armed groups operating in the Sahel region.
The Malian head of government’s participation in the FfD4 conference underscores the ESA’s ambition to exert influence in global discussions pertaining to development and economic governance.
