Morocco, represented by its ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Omar Zniber, will assume the presidency of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) until 13 March.
The CD is the United Nations’ sole multilateral negotiating forum for disarmament treaties.
According to Rabat, the presidency reflects Morocco’s standing as a committed and credible actor in support of multilateralism, dialogue and collective security.
It underscores the kingdom’s consistent commitment to a rules-based international order, cooperation and the pursuit of concerted solutions to shared global challenges.
Guided by the impetus and high directives of King Mohammed VI, Moroccan diplomacy positions itself as firmly engaged in international and multilateral mobilisation in favour of disarmament.
Through sustained and proactive action, Morocco seeks to make disarmament not only a strategic priority but also a central element of the agenda of international bodies, particularly within the United Nations, according to Moroccan diplomatic sources.
The Conference on Disarmament convenes this year in a particularly concerning geopolitical context, marked by escalating international tensions, widening divisions among member states, the gradual erosion of confidence-building measures and the continuation of arms build-up dynamics.
In this demanding environment, Morocco’s presidency of the CD carries particular significance and aims to rally efforts, restore a climate of trust and promote constructive and inclusive dialogue—deemed essential for enabling the conference to fully discharge its mandate, the same source noted.
The Moroccan presidency will be highlighted by a key event: the High-Level Ministerial Segment scheduled from 23 to 25 February. The segment will bring together around 40 eminent figures, including numerous foreign ministers and the UN Secretary-General, illustrating the renewed engagement and importance attached to revitalising dialogue and multilateral action in the field of disarmament.
