Morocco was elected on Wednesday in Addis Ababa, in the first round of voting, to serve a two-year term on the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU).
The kingdom secured more than a two-thirds majority, obtaining 34 votes during the election held as part of the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council.
Since its return to the African Union in 2017, Morocco has served twice on the PSC — first for a two-year term (2018–2020) and later for a three-year term (2022–2025). During these mandates, the kingdom says it contributed constructively to improving working methods and promoting best practices, in coordination with other PSC member states, within a responsible and inclusive framework.
The Peace and Security Council is the African Union’s standing decision-making body responsible for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts across the continent.
Morocco is participating in the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council with a delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
During the meeting, African ministers are expected to examine, among other items, the report of the 51st session of the Permanent Representatives Committee held in January.
The agenda also includes the election and appointment of officials to various AU organs, as well as the consideration of draft decisions to be submitted to heads of state.
The session precedes the 39th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for 14–15 February under the theme: “Ensuring Sustainable Availability of Water and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
