Morocco has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term, during elections held on Thursday in New York.
Morocco was elected with an emphatic result, securing 178 votes out of 187 cast by member states present and voting.
According to Moroccan diplomacy, the strong support reflects the confidence of UN member states in the kingdom’s sustained commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development and international cooperation.
It also highlights Morocco’s credibility as a constructive actor engaged in promoting a diplomacy based on dialogue, solidarity and mutual respect, the same source added.
Established under the UN Charter, ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It is responsible for guiding and coordinating the organisation’s economic, social and cultural activities, as well as overseeing follow-up to major UN conferences and summits.
Its key segments include the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Humanitarian Affairs Segment, and the Financing for Development Forum, all of which contribute to structuring collective action across the economic, social and environmental pillars of sustainable development.
According to Rabat, Morocco attaches particular importance to ECOSOC as a central organ of the UN system. At a time when the international community is facing multiple and interconnected challenges, the kingdom believes the Council plays a crucial role in strengthening coherence within the UN development system and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Moroccan diplomacy emphasised the country’s national experience and its regional and international engagement, saying it intends to actively contribute to reinforcing ECOSOC’s role as a coordination platform for stakeholders, including member states, international institutions, the private sector, civil society and academic actors.
The kingdom also reaffirmed its determination to continue contributing to the Council’s work and that of its subsidiary bodies, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, UN development system reform, development financing, and South-South and triangular cooperation.
