In a significant move to deepen West African integration, Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch co-chaired the 15th Joint High Commission on Cooperation in Rabat on Monday, January 26, 2026.
The high-level summit underscored a shared commitment to revitalizing the bilateral partnership, with both leaders emphasizing that the relationship between Dakar and Rabat is built on a unique foundation of political trust and centuries-old spiritual and cultural ties.
During the session, Prime Minister Sonko highlighted the “National Transformation Agenda – Senegal 2050,” positioning Morocco as a critical partner in achieving Senegal’s long-term development goals. The meeting led to the expansion of an already dense legal framework, with the signing of new agreements that span vital sectors such as energy, mining, pharmaceuticals, and agri-food. Sonko praised the existing contributions of Moroccan companies in Senegal’s banking and construction industries, noting that the new roadmap aims to elevate these economic exchanges to match the high expectations of both populations.
Aziz Akhannouch reinforced the historical depth of the alliance, pointing to the ancient trade routes and the influential role of the Tijaniyya Sufi Tariqa in cementing social bonds between the two peoples. He noted that the ongoing directives from King Mohammed VI and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye are focused on turning these traditional ties into modern economic sovereignty. By consolidating over 140 cooperation agreements, the two nations are working to establish a South-South cooperation model that serves as a stabilized hub for growth across the Atlantic and the African hinterland.
