The Mozambican government has declared a three-day national mourning period in honour of Pope Francis following his passing on Monday.
Planning Minister Salimo Valá told journalists in Maputo late Tuesday that the mourning would begin at midnight local time on Thursday (2200 GMT) until end of Saturday.
Flags are expected to fly at half-mast across the country and at Mozambican diplomatic missions abroad during the mourning period.
Valá revealed that the decision was made during the 13th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers in Maputo on Tuesday.
The minister said the declaration was in recognition of the pope’s humble leadership, commitment to the marginalised and his tireless advocacy for peace.
Pope Francis made a historic visit to Mozambique in September 2019 where he delivered a powerful sermon urging Mozambicans to reject violence and embrace peace and reconciliation.
His visit was widely regarded as a symbol of hope for the country, which had endured years of political and economic challenges.
