More than 1,700 schoolchildren in northern Mozambique’s Nampula province are at risk of missing their final exams due to renewed terrorist incursions that have disrupted education and forced mass displacement, state media reported on Friday.
AIM news agency said the affected pupils are from the administrative posts of Lúrio and Chipene in Memba district where Islamist militants raided communities on 30 September and 3 October.
The agency reported that the insecurity has intensified in recent days, with new attacks reported this week in Sirissa and Pavala, prompting further evacuations.
The insurgency, linked to jihadist groups operating in the region since 2017, has primarily targeted Cabo Delgado province but is increasingly spilling into neighbouring Nampula.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has warned of the violence’s geographic expansion, raising concerns about its impact on civilian life and public services.
