The Republic of Paraguay has announced a significant diplomatic move by confirming the upcoming opening of a Consulate General in Morocco’s southern provinces.
This action officially solidifies Asunción’s clear recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the Sahara region. The announcement came during a meeting in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Paraguayan counterpart, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano.
During the talks, Paraguay reaffirmed its full support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its 2007 autonomy initiative, which it considers “the only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for resolving the regional dispute.
Minister Ramírez Lezcano noted that the decision is consistent with Paraguay’s 2014 withdrawal of its recognition of the self-proclaimed “SADR,” underscoring the coherence of its supportive position toward the Kingdom. This move adds to the growing diplomatic shift in Latin America in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty claims.
The two ministers praised the strong bilateral political dialogue, recently bolstered by a round of political consultations held in Rabat in June 2025. They outlined key areas for future partnership, focusing on economic cooperation, institutional strengthening, and diplomatic coordination on international issues.
Minister Bourita commended Paraguayan President Santiago Peña’s vision, based on transparency and stability. In turn, Ramírez Lezcano paid tribute to Morocco’s constructive role in bringing Africa and Latin America closer together.
Both nations agreed to maintain a permanent consultation framework covering bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including the promotion of multilateralism and South-South development. The opening of the consulate symbolizes the consolidation of a partnership built on mutual respect and a shared vision for integrated development across the Atlantic.
