United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Tuesday the appointment of Pekka Haavisto, the former Foreign Minister of Finland, as his new Personal Envoy for Sudan.
The announcement was delivered by UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a daily press briefing in New York, highlighting Haavisto’s four decades of experience in international affairs and crisis mediation.
Haavisto, who succeeds Algeria’s Ramtane Lamamra, brings a specialized background in African diplomacy to the role. He previously served as Finland’s Special Representative for Mediation and Crisis Management in Africa and held the position of the European Union’s Special Representative for Sudan. His deep familiarity with the region is further bolstered by his past work as a Senior Advisor on the Darfur Peace Process.
Between 1999 and 2005, Haavisto worked extensively with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), leading post-conflict environmental assessments in global hotspots including Afghanistan, Iraq, Liberia, and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This diverse portfolio of ministerial and international roles is expected to be vital as he navigates the complex diplomatic landscape of Northeast Africa.
The appointment comes at a critical juncture for Sudan, which has been devastated by a brutal conflict between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. According to recent United Nations reports, the ongoing violence has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people. Haavisto’s primary challenge will be to mediate a path toward peace in what the UN has categorized as one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
