With 7,200 tonnes exported for a value of €41.5 million, Morocco consolidated its position as Africa’s leading exporter of prepared or preserved mackerel in 2024, accounting for 99 percent of the continental market.
This near monopoly has strengthened since 2013, with a 12-point gain in market share.
The average export price reached €5,725 per tonne, a slight increase, reflecting Morocco’s central role in price formation. Despite this, the annual export value has decreased by an average of -4.6 percent since 2013.
On the continent, consumption continues to grow, reaching 275,000 tonnes in 2024, driven by markets such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the DRC. The latter is also the largest market in terms of value, with €177 million.
African production reached 260,000 tonnes, up 2 percent, dominated by sub-Saharan African countries, while Morocco focused on its processing capacity. Imports, however, fell to 22,000 tonnes, reflecting a growing regionalisation of supply.
