The outgoing Congolese president, in power for over two decades, has announced his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for March 2026, with the support of the country’s ruling majority.
Denis Sassou-Nguesso, announced his candidacy for the March 2026 presidential election on
Thursday, seeking another term as head of state, according to a statement from his entourage. “I’m telling you directly: I will be submitting my candidacy,” he announced.
The 82-year-old head of state, in power since 1997 after a first term as president between 1979 and 1992, made the announcement during a public ceremony held in Ignié, north of Brazzaville.
He will be the candidate of the Congolese Labour Party (PCT) and the presidential majority, a coalition of several allied political parties.
The constitution, revised in 2015, which removed age and presidential term limits, allows Denis Sassou-Nguesso to run again.
The presidential election is scheduled for between March 12 and 15, 2026, in a political landscape marked by a divided opposition and persistent economic and social challenges.
