An unprecedented wave of solidarity has swept across Senegal following the suspicious death of young footballer Cheikh Touré in Ghana.
A fundraising campaign launched by comedian Mame Balla Mbow quickly surpassed its initial goal, raising over 7.2 million CFA francs in just a few days, while authorities investigate the tragedy.
The tragic death of the 20-year-old Senegalese athlete has spurred an outpouring of national support. Comedian Mbow launched the online campaign to raise 5 million CFA francs to support Touré’s family. Contributions from nearly 4,000 donors quickly exceeded this target, reaching 145 percent of the goal.
Mbow, who visited the family to explain his campaign, stressed the purpose of the funds: “I launched this fundraiser instinctively, and this sum will in no way replace their child, whom they lost in the prime of life.” He confirmed the funds will remain open until the disbursement process is finalized with the family.
Ghanaian police announced Monday that they have opened an investigation into the suspicious circumstances of Cheikh Touré’s death. Preliminary findings indicate the victim sustained several abdominal injuries. Police noted that the deceased was taken to Manhyia Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, by an individual who claimed to be his brother.
The Senegalese Ministry of African Integration confirmed Touré’s death, citing preliminary consular findings that the victim may have been targeted by a fraud and extortion network.
Dakar has contacted Ghanaian authorities to request a thorough investigation. Two officers from the Senegalese Embassy in Accra have been dispatched to Kumasi to assist local authorities and the family with the process of repatriating the remains. The Ministry assured the public that it is following the case “with the greatest attention.”
