Severe extreme weather has forced widespread school closures, crippled electricity supply, and heavily disrupted peak traffic in parts of South Africa, prompting emergency services to go on high alert.
Authorities warned residents against unsafe heating practices as snowfall, strong winds and heavy rain continued to batter parts of the country.
In Gauteng, emergency services said they were bracing for weather‑related emergencies while the KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Transport reported monitoring conditions along major routes affected by snow.
Separtment spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said roads, including Bothas Pass and the N11 Amajuba Pass, remained open, with snow beginning to clear in some areas.
“Weather is overcast from Cedara towards Midway along the N3. It is drizzling from Harrismith towards Van Reenen. Snow is beginning to clear towards Memel,” he noted.
