After months under recess, parliament in South Sudan is set to resume in the first week of June, the Office of the President has announced.
President Salva Kiir on Wednesday gave a directive to the effect of reopening the National Assembly. after holding talks with Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba, during which they reviewed legislative priorities for the upcoming session.
The National Assembly will debate the national budget for the 2025–2026 financial year, an initial step which the speaker said was imperative to addressing the country’s most pressing economic and development priorities.
President Kiir said the resumption of parliament ”signifies a new focus on national government and regional cooperation as the process of strengthening state institutions in the country continues”.
