A private plane left the runway during landing at Misrata International Airport on Monday, according to the Libyan Ministry of Transport (part of the Government of National Unity). The three crew members – including the captain and two others – managed to evacuate the aircraft before a fire broke out, an official from the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority told Sky News Arabia.
All three occupants are safe, and no injuries were reported. Relevant services have initiated operations to extinguish the fire and secure the area.
An investigation has also been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and identify the potential cause.
Sources previously cited by Sky News Arabia had suggested a technical issue as a possible cause of the incident. However, this hypothesis remains to be confirmed by the official investigation.
Authorities are expected to examine the condition of the runway and the circumstances under which the aircraft landed.
Air traffic at Misrata International Airport was temporarily suspended until midnight on Monday to allow for necessary checks and to ensure the runway’s safety. The closure also allows specialised teams to complete operations related to the incident.
The Ministry of Transport stated that these measures aim to ensure air navigation safety before traffic resumes.
The Civil Aviation Authority is expected to release further information once initial investigations
are complete. No casualties have been reported at this stage.
