Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called on Algerian researchers, academics, and experts living abroad to contribute to the country’s development during a cabinet meeting dedicated to promoting national talent.
This appeal materialized in the approval of the creation of the High Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad, a consultative body under the authority of the Presidency of the Republic endowed with administrative and financial autonomy.
According to an official statement, the head of state invited Algerian scientists in the diaspora to put their expertise at the service of the country’s development ambitions. He also praised their potential contribution in strategic sectors such as industry, energy, digital technology, and applied research.
This initiative comes as Algeria continues to face a significant brain drain, with many researchers, engineers, and doctors choosing to pursue their careers abroad after being drawn by better professional opportunities and more favorable research conditions. For many observers, the success of this initiative will depend less on the creation of a new structure than on the authorities’ ability to establish an environment conducive to innovation, strengthen research funding, and develop concrete links between the diaspora and national institutions.
