As Tripoli, Libyan capital remains under threat of renewed fighting, Al-Wasat TV is broadcasting a “Special Coverage” on rising tensions, international calls for de-escalation, and uncertainties surrounding the fragile security situation.
At 9 p.m. Libyan time, Al-Wasat TV (WTV) devoted its “Special Coverage” programme to recent military developments around Tripoli.
The broadcast takes place amid a climate of deep concern, fueled by warnings from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the European Union Mission in Libya (EUMA), and the Secretary General of the Arab League.
All are warning of the regional consequences of a possible resumption of hostilities in the capital.
Tripoli has been living under a precarious truce for several months.
Tensions are raging between forces loyal to the Interim Government of National Unity, led by Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, and the Presidential Council’s Counterterrorism and Organised Crime Force.
Last May, the Prime Minister’s unilateral decision to dissolve “all militias” operating in Tripoli sparked violent clashes in the city centre, leaving at least eight dead, according to the United Nations.
Since then, troop movements toward the capital, particularly from Misrata, have revived the spectre of a new urban war.
Observers fear that a minor incident could lead to an uncontrollable spiral of violence in a country fragmented since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
To try to decipher this explosive situation, WTV is bringing together several experts and analysts this evening. The debate promises to shed light on the role of the various armed actors, Dbeibah’s strategy, and the international community’s room for manoeuvre.
