The opening stage of the 18th Tour du Rwanda was overshadowed by tragedy on Sunday when a vehicle from the event’s publicity caravan veered off the road, killing two spectators and injuring six others in the Gabiro region.
According to an official statement released by the race organizers, the vehicle lost control and struck several people lined up along the route of the 173km stage between Rukomo and Rwamagana. While the six injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, local authorities and law enforcement have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the fatal incident. The organizers expressed their deepest condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed their commitment to public safety for the remainder of the tour.
Despite the somber atmosphere, the race continued, with Israeli rider Itamar Einhorn of the NSN Development Team claiming victory in the first stage. This year’s edition of the prominent African cycling race is scheduled to conclude on March 1st in Kigali, featuring several routes that were utilized during the recent World Championships.
As the investigation into the accident continues, the cycling community remains in mourning for the lives lost during what was intended to be a celebratory start to the prestigious event.
